Joseph Mwangi Mukundi

Joseph Mwangi Mukundi is a 23 year old young man in form two at Mukangu Secondary school in Murang’a County. He is an only son and the last born in a family of six including his mother. Joseph lost his father at a tender age and his mother is their sole provider. He sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2012 whereby he scored a mean grade of C+. Having not qualified to join the university under the JAB program and could not pursue the degree course (computer science) that he wanted due to lack of finances, He became very frustrated and resulted to drinking alcohol. His drinking became so problematic that he was always in bad terms with his dear mother and siblings. He could sleep out most of the nights or come in late and he was always getting into endless fights. This menace continued for a couple of months until one day when Joseph heard about a public awareness forum that was being hosted by Gamafrica Foundation in Kangema. He therefore decided to attend the event and later registered himself as a member of the foundation. Since then his life changed for the better and his way of thinking and viewing life was totally transformed.

Turn around.

Gamafrica Executive Director visiting the school…

Visiting Joseph at school…

Even before completing his Gamafrica training sessions, Joseph decided to go back to secondary school in order to pursue his dreams of doing computer science. He joined the form two classes so that he could catch up with the English set books. His mother was so overwhelmed by this gesture that she decided to come and see the Gamafrica Foundation trainers personally. During this visit she could not hold back her tears.

We also decided to visit Joseph at school, and he was very surprised and happy to see us. He said that he could not be intimidated by the other students because of his age and that now he is more determined and focused to achieve his goals. We highly encouraged him not to give up and were very impressed by his progress. We also decided to do some school shopping for him that is books, uniform, a bicycle, a school bag among others which amounted to a total of Kshs.30, 000.
